PlayStation VR Things You Need to Know

PlayStation is entering Virtual Reality arena and that’s why we are here today to talk to you about some important things that you need to know before you even consider buying PlayStation VR.

PlayStation VR is a very comfortable device. Making this device comfortable is one of the biggest concern people have when designing and making the PlayStation VR hardware. People who are responsible for PlayStation VR have put  a real effort in making this device in such a way that it does not hurt your neck. It’s a balanced device with no weight force on the back or on your face and of course, there is no force on either sides. The device is made in such a way that it would be easy to use for glasses wearers.

The screen size of PlayStation VR is 5.7″and it has a resolution of 1920X1080. In fact, it has normal 1080 but the other number is divided into 960 [(960X1080 for each eye)]. The device has two refresh rates 90Hz and 120Hz, 180 degree Field of View (FOV) and Latency of less than 18 Milliseconds. Low Latency is necessary if you want to simulate a virtual world. The device has 9 LED that used for 360 degree tracking. PlayStation VR is totally compatible with the PlayStaion Move Controller and DualShock 4 Controller.

PlayStation VR ReprojectionIn PlayStation VR, Framrate Drops are not allowed, like never. The logic behind this is that if there are framerate drops it can easily cause motion sickness. There are three framerates allowed and a feature called Reprojection. This Reprojection feature that interpolates all frames at all times is required to be “On” all the time. First framerate is 60Hz and with reprojection “On” it will create 120Hz framerate. Second framerate is 90Hz and with reprojection “On” it will create 90Hz framerate. And last framerate is 120Hz and yes you need reprojection “On” even if the game is rendering 120Hz framerate. Sony is not just playing around they really not want people to get sick while using PlayStation VR. Another thing to notice that we all get angry whenever there’s a framerate drop in any game and this is without the “VR”.

The Launch Bundle is really good, it comes with the Headset, VR Demo Disc, Stereo Headphones, PlayStaion Camera, Two PlayStaion Move Controllers and VR Worlds Disc which includes some social games.

PlayStation VR Launch Bundle

Pre-Orders in the UK are crazy, every time they put the PlayStation VR it’s gone in just minutes. And the shops are requiring a 100 pound deposit to do the pre-orders. Pre-Orders in the US will start tomorrow that is 22nd March. You can get this as a stand alone or in a bundle as mentioned above. If you do not have a PlayStation 4 you have to buy that too because it does not work without PS4.

The Cinematic Mode of this device will let you play any PlayStaion 4 game in the PlayStation VR Headset. Though it will not be same as the VR specific games but you can have three levels of zoom to see specific details in the game. This cinematic mode is really awesome as it will let you enjoy the content on a up to 225″ virtual screen, which in fact is a 5 meter screen at just 2.5 meter distance which is pretty close to a wall.

The notable games that are coming for the PlayStation VR are PlayStaion VR Worlds (Comes with the Bundle), ADR1FT, Golem, Robinson: The Journey, Wayward Sky, Headmaster, RIGS Mechanized Combat League, EVE Valkyrie, Rez Infinite, Ace Combat 7, Eagle Flight, Superhypercube and Gran Turismo Sport (Trailer Below) which by the way looks awesome. Aside from all these games, there are more than 290 developers who are working on different games.

October 16th is the date when the PlayStation VR is coming at the following prices;

  • $399 USD
  • €399/£349
  • $549.95 AUD
  • ¥44,980

The price is reasonable as compared to other VR products in the market and I think PlayStation will soon overpower the market because of this price tag and the release date that is not too distant in the future.

PlayStaion Camera is a must for PlayStaion VR and the above launch bundle include this and other cool stuff for just $499. This is somewhat expansive but if you think this is great bundle as it has many great stuff in it as compared to the base package that will cost you $399 and has no other stuff than headset and cables. If you can just go for the bundle it is worth every dollar.

And the last thing that you need to know about the PlayStation VR is that if you want to play games on TV using PlayStation 4 while someone is playing games on VR, you have to change the way you are using the PlayStation VR. because PlayStation VR has a very strict framerate requirements so developers have to really come up with some great idea to put all the details. But for now I’m sure we all be playing party games that will mostly look like Nintendo games than heavy duty games such as Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, The Witcher 3.

But I think we should all be optimistic because it’s just a beginning of a new VR era and there’s lot more to come.
