Stormfall Age of War

Stormfall: Age of War is a one of the best browser-based strategy games with good animations, graphics and voice acting, though its pay-to-win feature may make some players not willing to continue playing after higher levels. Its retro-styled 2D graphics looks great and the character portraits are awesome. The user interface is initially overwhelming but the tutorial made it simple & easy to understand. Fans of RPG-strategy and browser-based games may find something awesome to like in the Stormfall: Age of War!

Stormfall Age of War Review

Stormfall Age of War Review

Stormfall Age of War is an online RTS (real time strategy) and RPG game from Plarium. It’s a free-to-play game that allows players to build castle and raise armies which will feel familiar to some players if they have played other base building games.

The game is set in the kingdom of Darkshine, where after the fall of Stormfall Empire, players take the role of a Lord/lady in order to grab a piece of land. Players will raise armies to take on both Human and AI enemies in the Horde of Balur for victory and resources.

This is a browser based strategy game with features like PvP battles, real time interface, isometric top-down camera, strong voice acting, etc. I must say that the voice acting for Lord Oberon in the game really hit me off, it’s strong, feels real and sarcastic.

Lord Oberon is a sarcastic narrator who will explain all the fundamentals of the game to new players. He’ll introduce you to the overwhelming interface of the game. But, unfortunately, he mostly disappears after the tutorial ends and then the game returns to a somewhat text-based experience.

Stormfall Age of War Review - Buildings

Stormfall Age of War Review – Graphics & Animations:

The game has great animations for both units and buildings and the graphics are pretty similar to Age of Empires. The times for building structure is near-instant which is a good thing for a free-to-play game. And as the game progresses, players will learn about all the different buildings and their purpose. Some buildings produce resources such as food, while others unlock different mechanics such as new units and scrolls.

Stormfall Age of War Review – Raid and Besiege:

It’s a strategy game so players should have a balanced strategy for improving the castle, gathering resources, raising armies and researching for upgrades. Apart from gathering resources from buildings such as Farm or Mine, players can gather resources by raiding other players in the realm. You have maximum 10 raid points which means you can raid other players ten times. Don’t worry about consuming these raiding points as these points will regenerate as the day progresses.

Same as raiding players, you can also lay siege to other player’s city. Besieging players will award you besieging points which then provide you a chance to earn premium in-game currency. And ultimately provide players a chance to buy more powerful units.

Raiding and Besieging other players is a very dangerous strategy especially when you are just starting a new game. As a new player if you engage in this kind of strategy, you should remember that your own castle is vulnerable. So, you should join the league early in the game to have their protection. Enemy players are more likely to attack loners than league members because league members can send reinforcements in times of need.

Stormfall Age of War Review - Leagues

Stormfall Age of War Review – Leagues:

When player joins the league, it’ll allow players access to more PvP content. Players can participate on different League quests for more rewards and they even can receive/send reinforcements. You can also send reinforcements to the Beacons and strengthen the league’s influence on the map. However, remember one thing that Beacons are guarded by orcs and other league’s reinforcements.

Once you capture a Beacon, the League have to defend it from the Black Horde orcs who drop Dark Essence. This Dark Essence can be used to darken the player’s units. A Darkened unit will consume less resources and is more effective in the combat.

Stormfall Age of War Review – Units and Combat:

As we are on the subject of combat and units, players will build armies with unique and different types of units such as defensive, offensive and spy. All these units have their own weakness and strengths against other types of units. The combat in the game is reduced to a mere numerical analysis of the unit types and score values. It is a little disappointing that the strategic placement of buildings in your castle does not mean anything. And if there are some visuals added to the combat it would definitely make Stormfall a much more interesting game.

Stormfall Age of War Review – Pay-to-Win:

Stormfall: Age of War features a pay-to-win game experience. Nowadays freemium games allow players to skip wait times, offer unique buildings and units using an in-game premium currency. This can lead to overspending by the players. But Plarium is not like that, players will find different offers at the time of loading the game. These offers vary form instantly gaining overpowered units to other interesting offers/news.

Stormfall Age of War Review - Black Market

As you progress through the game, it’ll become very clear that if you’re willing to pay for a legendary units like Great western Dragon, you can easily dominate and crush non-purchasing players. And on account of this pay-to-win, the battlefield in Stormfall: Age of War becomes a dark place.

Stormfall: Age of War delivers an entertaining experience as the player progress, level up, raise armies, and engage in wars against AI and human players. Stormfall is a game with various polished valuable things to grind, that makes this game one of the best browser-based video games. The obvious pay-to-win aspect is a big downside of the game, but if you can commit enough time to the kingdom of Darkshine, you will find an interesting game.

Stormfall Age of War is available as both a browser-based game and an iPhone/Android app with the name Stormfall: Rise of Balur. FunkyVideoGames reviewed the browser-based game. You can play Stormfall Strategy Game here.
