Doom 2016 Review

Doom 2016 is like a reboot which best single-player that id Software has created since the Quake II. The Doom 2016 may not be groundbreaking or flawless but it sure is ferocious, stylish and extremely exciting. This is what every fan has been waiting from the Doom sequel.

Doom 2016’s opening is really amazing and one of the memorable openings of all time: dumping you directly into the Hell of Demons and particularly rejecting new ideas like exposition. The story in a game is expected to be there but it’s not that important to be a great game. When you are shooting and killing monsters in Doom, you are almost locked in a room with various monsters and the system implies that you have to kill all the nearby enemies to unlock the door.

At first, the shooting feels great thanks to amazing and powerful weapons but then after some time it begins to wear thin as you repeat all of this for the next 8-9 hours. You enter in a room kills all the gruesome monsters and unlock a new door. The campaign has some twists with unexpected boss battles though. For some players, this exactly what Doom 2016 should be, because it is identical in many ways to 1993 Doom. This does not mean that the latest installment has no fun, it’s action is classic for a reason but this doesn’t distinguish Doom 2016 from recreating 25 years of gameplay.

In you r gameplay you are equipped with various weapons, that starts simple and then grow to something more powerful and destructive. Not all weapons are created equal but many weapons are horrible and has terrifying destructive power. The constant stream of upgrades will allow you to tweak your favorite weapons in order to give them more functionality and strength. This power also extends to ‘Glory Kills’, these kills can be triggered when you cause an enemy to stagger.

Most of the enemies occasionally drop health and ammo items but you are guaranteed to have health item when you kill your enemies with bare hands. This triggers a feeling to rush in and take down hideous creatures even on the brink. You can also use chainsaw to rip your enemies in half for one hit kill. In Doom 2016, when you are exploring the map for different supplies, you act like a magnet: drawing all  kinds of creatures towards you.

Doom 2016 Review

Exploration elements in Doom 2016 provide relief from all this monster killing mayhem. There are various collectibles and secrets for you to find out in Doom. The hardest collectibles and secrets can be found at the end of tough platforming.

The multiplayer mode is a generic shooter experience with some bad ideas mixed in, if it had the same bond as nostalgic shooter as you can find in single player, it might have turned out better. In the beginning of each life you have two weapons. Hack module in the game acts like perks and the melee system locks you into animations, sometimes in most ridiculous ways.

The multiplayer mode in Doom 2016 has an old star map design that conflicts with its new star progression system. The shortcuts and fixed power up placements give advantage to experienced players who know the map. This makes the decision to restrict access to weapons and include a Call of Duty style leveling system. And this also gives experienced players an upper hand because it gives them access to more powerful weapons and more dangerous demon runes.

These demon runes actually transform you into one of four demons which is wildly unbalanced. In this powerful and dangerous Demon form, kills have less to do with player’s skills and more to do with basic level of awareness. When these demon runes spawns on the field, many will abandon their current objective and be in line for these runes. When you acquire a demon rune everyone will just run away because of the fear of one hit kill.

Doom 2016 Review

The Snapmap map editor really the best thing in Doom 2016’s Multiplayer, with great tutorial this awesome creation tool allows you to create your own maps for co-op and competitive multiplayer modes. You are stuck with the limited template system but despite of these limitations people are already creating some great maps.

The Doom 2016 is like two different games, the single player campaign has nostalgic shooter experience with exciting ferocious and brutal chaos. But the Multiplayer game mode tries to combine modern FPS experience, map design and call of duty style loadouts, failing to capture the elements that makes multiplayer excitingly addictive.
