10 Things Ruining Video Games

3. Incomplete, Early-Access Games

Incomplete, Early-Access Games

Early Access was meant to be a great opportunity for gamers to see the evolution of a game and essentially get involved in the development phase of an indie game, helping and giving feedback to completion as the developers work on that game for the next 6 months or year or may be forever.

Some developers have actually embraced Early Access and finally released the full game such as Kerbal Space Program and Prison Architect which were as much the work of developers  as the input from players. Steam is now overflowing with half finished titles and clearly going nowhere.

The problem here is that once you have dashed out on a game with good and pure intentions of helping it through to the end product, and 6 months down the road the developers pull out of the program for whatever reasons, you will never get your money back. Variety of games remain in limbo for this reason and infamously ‘All Talk’ and ‘Godus’ which collected huge money from Early Access Buyers on Steam and Kickstarter, only to be never see the completion, didn’t fulfill promises and now leave gamers with two mediocre video games which are not close to what originally promised.

Early Access can be great for gaming but if it is not well organized and regulated then there is a risk that we will lose faith in this system, which would result in huge loss.
